This was an impossible selection – perhaps more so than any artist I can think of – just so many great songs to choose from. No room here for: Five Years, Fame, Absolute Beginners, Cat People, Jean Genie, Drive-In Saturday, Slip Away, Ashes To Ashes, Fashion, Modern Love, China Girl, Oh You Pretty Things (hey, it’s just become a Top 20! Ed), and on and on it goes and that’s before the new album, The Next Day, even sinks fully into the consciousness.

No Queen bitch? Nothing from Low?
I think the soul influence should be recognised more strongly in a list and would include ‘Young Americans’. But I agree, a very difficult task.

It’s good to revisit some of these earlier lists. When I saw the original, I remember thinking ‘Yes! I need most of these, but then that I’d replace Slow Burn and Wild Is The Wind with Rebel, Rebel (for your Diamond Dogs) and Jean Genie. But then there’s Breaking Glass from Low too, and Young Americans too. One way of reacting to a list is to write ten down fast without even looking at sleeves. I just tried it before typing, and Changes came first, then Rebel Rebel, then Young Americans. I saw the Hunky Dory tour early on, Southampton Guidhall, front row, low stage. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I saw him a few months later, and he wasn’t as good. Rehearsed poses without the urgency of that early show. It means I’d like Queen Bitch, Oh, You Pretty Things, Life on Mars, Song for Bob Dylan too given a long list. If my memory serves me well, he did White Light, White Heat live, two years before he recorded it and I think he segued it into Queen Bitch. Or vice versa. I prefer Hunky Dory to Ziggy Stardust, but can you leave out Starman? Forgot to add it’s a magnificent list, feel bad that my suggestion comes across as snarky. Golden Years is one of those songs I always forget about till I hear it and realise it’s a great song over again.
Not snarky at all, David. The fun of the lists is that there always other suggestions, which do not detract from the original list. With a multi-phase career stretching back to Davie Jones and The King Bees / Mannish Boys / Lower Third a list of fifty still requires considerable thought and editing. Record Store Day 2013 saw the vinyl EP from that era “Bowie 1965!” as one of the most desirable items. I saw the Lower Third at least twice and nothing whatsoever has stuck in my memory … they were a “third on the bill” band on three band gigs. I looked at his discography just now. I dropped out after Tin Machine (which I loathed) and don’t know the albums between Tin Machine and The Next Day. It would be interesting to get a guide to ten tracks from (say) Tin Machine one onwards.
