Vancouver’s A.C. (Carl) Newman is much better known in Canada and the US – where he is now based – than he is in the UK, mainly through his endeavours as chief songwriter with The New Pornographers. But his three solo albums (2004-2012) are a treat for the ears in their own right and certainly do not suffer by comparison to his esteemed output with the ‘indie supergroup’.
Newman makes songwriting sound natural and unforced. Engaging, unaffected hooks and fluent melodies float freely through his songs, and there’s also an understated inventiveness to add some edge and spice in all the right places.
Thoroughly recommended.

As a Canadian and longtime fan of the Vancouver super group, the music of The New Pornographers is a lot of fun. The individual components are good – A.C. Newman/Dan Bejar (Destroyer)/Neko Case/etc..
John’s list above is very good. A solid 10 songs. I recommend the songs below that are not on an A.C. album.
Beer Run – an instrumental from Souvenir of Canada – EP 2006
Memphis – Tribute to Altman’s ‘Nashville’ 2002
There Were Maybe Ten or Twelve – single 2009
Thanks Mark. I haven’t heard the Memphis track you mention but I will certainly check it out.
Here’s a different version of I’m Not Talking. And here, with Neko Case,
The Hudson River Sessions – Part 1. (Gorgeous… Ed.)
I love Neko Case’s voice. I could watch/listen to this all day.
