You can read the story of Nirvana – the rise of a sound, the tragic end of the band – on many other sites on the net. I’m sticking to just sharing my favourite songs!
Nirvana are arguably one of the most iconic bands of a generation with their album Nevermind being one of the best selling albums of all time. There will be many a mid-thirty something out there that knows every word to every song on that album and is taken back to their teenage years every time they hear the opening riffs to Polly.
I have left Smells Like Teen Spirit out of my toppermost as, although it is an awesome song, it is overplayed and in my opinion somewhat overrated.
Kurt Cobain was a very complex guy who had many demons and these reflected in the rawness of his lyrics and tone. Cobain impacted more than he will ever know on a generation and I can’t help but wonder what he would have continued to do if he had chosen life.

Just listening to the great Unplugged album to mark Kurt’s anniversary. A great album, indeed… “Jesus Don’t Want Me for A Sunbeam” a personal favourite…
Kurt would have loved the brevity, nice one. I was in my early thirties and the 17 year old office trainee came in raving about Nirvana, and when I asked what was good/different he looked at me with utter contempt and said “you just won’t get it”, which was red dust cleaning cloth to my record playing bull so I went out and bought Nevermind and was blown away. I reckon the soft/loud dynamic has dated somewhat, but you’ve got to give credit to Butch Vig for seeing what Kurt was doing. Agree on Smells, I’ve never really been able to listen to it properly since I read that it’s his attempt to play More Than a Feeling. Aneurysm and Polly are my absolute favs, your list is spot on and a great intro to the next generation of 17 year olds about to discover them.
